Scope and Content Note
General Observations
Three periods in Laughlin's diplomatic career supply the focus of this
collection: Secretary and Councilor of Embassy, London, 1912-19; Minister
to Greece, 1924-26; Ambassador to monarchist and republican Spain, 1929-33.
While there are some manuscripts pertaining to earlier service in the Far
East, Paris, and Berlin; there is very little from this period (1903-12) of
any great significance. Of the three main periods, the Greek period is more
sparsely documented. There are also manuscripts concerning the Spanish
Embargo from the period 1935-39.
At first glance, much of Laughlin's correspondence with fellow diplo-
mats appears to be no more than idle chit chat or routine diplomatic business.
However, students of the State Department in the period 1905-33 and biographers
of diplomatic figures will be interested in the insights these men's comments
furnish with respect to the operation of the Department, their working conditions,
and one another.
