Biographical Note
1889, August 30
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Harry Lincoln and
Emily Kirkland Marshall.
1908
First newspaper job with the Cedar Rapids Republican.
1909-11
Police reporter and, later, night city editor with
the Sioux City Journal.
1911
Wrote articles for the London (England) Chronicle.
1911-12
Attended Coe College, Cedar Rapids.
1913-14
Reporter for the Minneapolis Tribune.
1914-16
Reporter for the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
1916, February
Went to France and served as an ambulance driver on
the Verdun front.
1916-19
Returned to the United States, enlisted in the U.S.
Army, and was assigned to special duty as a War Bond
drive speaker.
1919, April 21
Married Frances Durand Fiske.
1919--1941
Became managing editor of the Cedar Rapids Gazette
and editor following the death of his father in 1932.
1920-21
Series of newspaper articles which led to statewide
reform in the handling of milk and the control of
disease in dairy cattle.
1928
Death of Mrs. Marshall.
1930-32
Investigation of mismanagement at the University of
Iowa is prompted by a series of articles appearing
in the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
1932 May 21
Married Clementine Robichaux.
1934-40
Investigations of political corruption caused by
gambling and liquor interests is prompted by a series
of Gazette articles. Receives Pulitzer Prize in 1936.
1940
Marshall nominated Col. Hanford MacNider for the
presidency at the Republican national convention.
1940-41
Organized and led the No Foreign War Committee to
oppose U.S. involvement in World War II, resigning
his post as editor to devote full time to this cause.
1953-57
Wrote columns for the Marion (Iowa) Sentinel.
1965, March 26
Death of Marshall, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
