GERALD P. NYE PAPERS
The papers of Gerald P. Nye, newspaper editor, United States
Senator (North Dakota) and business management consultant, were
given to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library by Mr. Nye on
June 9, 1967. Several accretions have been received subsequently.
Literary rights in the unpublished writings of Gerald P. Nye in
these papers have been transferred to the United States.

Born at Hortonville, Wisconsin.

Graduated from high school, Wittenberg, Wisconsin,
and became the editor of the Hortonville
Weekly Review.
1916, August 16
Married Anna Margaret Munch at Bayfield, Wisconsin.
1919, September
Became the editor of the Griggs County Sentinel-
Nonpartisan League members.
1925, November 14
Appointed United States Senator by Governor
Sorlie to fill vacancy due to the death of
Senator E. F. Ladd. At a special election
coinciding with the state primary election
on June 30, 1926, Nye won the right to fill
Ladd's unexpired term and the Republican
nomination for the November, 1926 senate race.

Chairman of Public Lands and Surveys Committee
during last portion of its investigation of the
Teapot Dome oil scandal.

Chairman of Senate select committee to investigate
campaign expenditures of candidates for
United States Senate.

Chairman of special Senate committee to investi-
gate the munitions industry’s connections with
World War I.

Actively promoted cause of neutrality by speaking

Correspondence concerning speaking engagements accepted by Nye,
including a few engagements which were subsequently cancelled.
Also includes as enclosures to correspondence: itineraries,
programs, clippings, and a few favorable comments. Supplemented
by Invitations Declined and Speakers' Bureaus sub-series.

Correspondence concerning speaking engagements Nye declined to
undertake. Supplemented by Arrangements and Speakers' Bureaus
subseries. Arranged chronologically by date of engagement and
thereunder alphabetically by name of individual or group
sponsoring the engagement.
REACTIONS AND COMMENTS 1937-39 2 1/5 containers
Correspondence commenting on and requesting copies of Nye's
speeches. Arranged chronologically by date of speaking
engagement.
SPEAKERS' BUREAUS 1935-41 2 containers.
Correspondence with several speakers' bureaus responsible for
scheduling Nye's speaking engagements. Primarily concerned
with the settling of Nye's expense accounts, but also contains
discussions as to which bureau would have the right to schedule
Nye's appearances in various areas. Also a few letters of
reaction and comment which were forwarded by various bureaus.
Supplemented by the Arrangements and Invitations Declined
