Scope and Content Note
For almost thirty years the nationally syndicated columns of
(James) Westbrook Pegler enjoyed a readership rivalled by few of
his peers. This collection of his private papers provides useful
insights into the private life and career of a major journalist and
the public issues of his day. Of particular interest to historians,
journalists and biographers of literary figures is the journalistic
lore of the 1890's and early 1900's preserved in the unpublished
autobiographies of Pegler and his father Arthur James Pegler. It is
difficult to adequately describe the full range of topics to which
Pegler devoted himself during his long career. The pages that follow
provide a brief outline of the highlights of his career and the oppor-
tunities for research afforded by this unique collection.
In his unpublished autobiography and in occasional reminiscences
in his columns Pegler recalled that his apprenticeship began in 1910
when the chief of the Chicago bureau of the United Press Service hired
him to read news dispatches to downstate editors over the telephone.
After a series of more responsible jobs, he was posted to the UP's
London office in 1916; and, when the United States entered the War,
he was reassigned as a war correspondent on the Western Front. However,
his accreditation as a correspondent was soon revoked after quarrels
over censorship policies.
During the early 1920's Pegler achieved his first journalistic
success as a sports columnist. His irreverent tongue-in-cheek
critiques of major sports figures and events stood in stark contrast
to the romanticized style of reporting then in vogue and soon
attracted a large following. As his circulation and reputation grew,
his editors sought to capitalize on this appeal and sent him out on
more general assignments including coverage of the 1928 Republican
national convention. The following spring he launched the first of
his many crusades as an investigative reporter. These departures
from his usual format became more frequent and, in December 1933, he
was offered a contract to write a daily column on politics and
subjects of his own choosing for the newly formed Scripps-Howard
Syndicate.
Pegler's column, "Fair Enough", appeared for the first time on
December 11, 1933. During the next twenty-nine years it would be
continuously syndicated in over one hundred forty newspapers by the
Scripps-Howard (1933-43) and later by the Hearst King Features
Syndicates (1943-62)* He cited his initial uneasiness at being cast
so suddenly amongst "the gold standard crowd, the NRA crowd, the
Governor-do-your duty group, and the whither are we drifting writers."
He would claim only "authority to speak for the rabble because I am
a member of the rabble in good standing." As their spokesman Pegler
expressed outrage and contempt for the pretentions, hypocrisy, and
dishonesty he found in high places and was deeply concerned by the
concentration of power in the federal goverment. His readers
expressed delight in having a personal spokesman and frequently
wrote that they considered him the last great defender of the
common man.
* The Pegler Papers contain a fairly complete run of these, columns for
the years 1929-62. A representative sampling of the earlier period,
from 1915 to 1928 is also included.
At first Pegler treated the Roosevelt administration critically,
but objectively. He voted for FDR in 1936, urged his readers to do
likewise; and, as late as May 1938, would describe Mrs. Roosevelt as
"the greatest American woman." However, by 1941, his earlier
admiration had faded and he became an outspoken critic of the New Deal's
foreign and domestic policies, its attitude towards organized labor,
and its first lady.
In 1941 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for writing numerous
exposes of union racketeers. These columns and the award elicited a
steady flow of mail from disgruntled rank and file union members and
assured Pegler's role as one of labor's best informed critics.
Although frequently attacked for his views, he continued to oppose
the victimization of the rank and file by racketeers and the subversion
of honestly run unions by communists. The subversion of other American
institutions emerged as another major theme in Pegler's columns, and
his correspondence with numerous people reflect this concern.
Although he later regretted having supported it, Pegler was one
of the early dues paying members of the American Newspaper Guild.
After resigning in protest in 1935, he continued to receive letters and
literature from some of his fellow dissidents and wrote several columns
on the power struggles within the Guild and its cousin, the
International Typographical Union.
Pegler's reputation as a hard-hitting political analyst tended
to obscure his equally well-deserved reputation as a humorist and
literary craftsman. Over the years his most appreciated columns
were those whimsical flights in which he extolled alternately, the
gustatory merits of chile con carne, the virtues of the prim wisteria,
and the delights of a mischievous Minnesota boyhood. In addition to
his regular column, King Features also carried (1947-62) the continuing
misadventures of "Mr. and Mrs. George Spelvin--Americans" demonstrating
Pegler's considerable gifts for parody and satire which were unleashed
with devastating effect on the foibles of American politics, manners,
and mores.
During the last third of his career, Pegler became an outspoken
critic of journalistic ethics. He was convinced that a "historic
blackout" during the 1940's and early 1950's had succeeded in muzzling
such critics of the New Deal as Harry Elmer Barnes, Boake Carter,
Hugh Johnson, John T. Flynn, and Charles C. Tansill. By 1955 he was
convinced that a similar effort was underway to silence him. The
more critical he became, the more his column appeared to be edited
and censored. Relations with the syndicate management. deteriorated
and, in 1962, Pegler and King Features parted company. From 1962 until
his death in 1969 he wrote for a number of small, conservative papers
and the John Birch Society's American Opinion.
Biographers of literary figures and students of journalism
history will find many informative and amusing anecdotes and descriptions
in the unpublished autobiographies of Westbrook and Arthur James Pegler,
and in Pegler's columns and correspondence. The list of literary
and journalism notables referred to is seemingly endless and
includes: Roy Howard, Victor Riesel, Karl Bickel, William R. Hearst,
Jr., Katherine Brush, Margaret Mitchell, Ward Greene, George Pattullo,
Paul Gallico, Richard E. Berlin, Walter Trohan, Ralph E. McGill,
Drew Pearson, Robert Ruark, Ring Lardner, Walter Winchell, Quentin
Reynolds, George E. Sokolsky, Grantland Rice, Edward R. Murrow,
Damon Runyon, and Heywood Broun. Significant correspondents include:
Roy Howard, William R. Hearst, Jr., George Pattullo, Ward Greene,
Margaret Mitchell, Richard E. Berlin, Robert Ruark, and Walter Trohan.
