PRESIDENT'S PERSONAL FILE
Scope and Content Note
The President's Personal File (PPF) is an alphabetically arranged name and
subject file (105 linear feet) that includes correspondence, telegrams, memoranda and
printed materials. Correspondence appears to have been filed in this personal file rather
than in an "official" file in one of the other series of the Presidential Papers because a
personal response from the President was expected. The contents of this series reflect
the President's ceremonial, political and policy roles.
The correspondence in this series may more conveniently be described according
to generic types rather than subjects, and includes: letters soliciting messages from the
President to be read at meetings, anniversaries, celebrations and other public gatherings;
commendations of public policies and statements; acknowledgement of greeting cards
and gifts sent to the President; messages received after the election of 1932; and
correspondence with members of the press and representatives of religious, professional,
educational, patriotic, industrial and political organizations. The series also contains
correspondence with personal friends in which the President responds to comments and
advice on administration policy and political questions.
Although maintained separately from the other series in the Presidential Papers,
many names and subjects appearing elsewhere are duplicated in PPF. Unlike the other
series, however, the PPF is not cross referenced via the Secretary's File. In an effort to
correct this situation, a selective card index to the PPF has been prepared. This index
not only provides name and subject access to PPF files, but provides a vehicle for cross
referencing from appropriate subject files in the balance of the Presidential Papers to
PPF files. This has been accomplished by placing Xerox copies of PPF index cards--in
lieu of cross reference sheets--into related subject files. The Secretary's File, consisting
primarily of name files, has been excluded from this effort. Large portions of PPF
containing public reaction mail, routine requests for messages, and acknowledgement
of gifts have not been indexed. For a more complete explanation of the limitations of
the PPF index see the "Guidelines" card at the beginning of the PPF index.
The index cards are available to researchers upon request.
